Toccoa Man Arrested on Forgery Warrant; Deputies Say He Had Fentanyl, Meth and Counterfeit Currency

STEPHENS COUNTY, Ga. – A 25-year-old Toccoa man wanted on forgery and theft charges was arrested Monday after deputies say they found suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, pills and counterfeit currency during a search.

According to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Crime Suppression Unit arrested Chandler Smith, 25, of Toccoa, on Sept. 21 after making contact with him at approximately 12:30 p.m. inside a convenience store on Big A Road in Toccoa.

Smith had active warrants related to forgery and theft in Toccoa, according to the sheriff’s office.

After placing Smith under arrest, deputies searched him and reportedly found a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine, along with a green-colored substance that field-tested positive for fentanyl. Deputies also reportedly found various unidentified pills and drug-related objects.

Investigators additionally found eight suspected counterfeit $100 bills, according to the sheriff’s office.

Smith was transported to the Stephens County Detention Center.

In addition to the original forgery and theft charges, Smith faces charges of possession of a Schedule III controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession and use of drug-related objects, first-degree forgery and four counts of prescription drugs not in their original container.

The sheriff’s office said Smith remained in custody pending a bond hearing before a Stephens County magistrate court judge.

Smith is also wanted on felony probation charges in Habersham County, according to the sheriff’s office.
