GBI Arrests Man in Murder and Aggravated Assault Investigation in Stephens County

PRESS RELEASE – The GBI has arrested and charged Christopher Vaughn, age 39, of Toccoa, GA with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The Stephen’s County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to assist them with a stabbing investigation that occurred in Toccoa, Stephens County, Georgia on December 28, 2023, resulting in the death of one man and substantial injuries to a woman.

On Thursday, December 28, 2023, at around 7:40 a.m., the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a person stabbed call at a home on Bart Holcomb Rd. When deputies arrived, they found William James Vaughn, age 63, of Toccoa, dead in his home. The deputies cleared the home and found Christopher Vaughn locked inside a room. He was taken into custody.

Another victim, Janet Lynn Vaughn, age 62, of Toccoa, was located at a home nearby and airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Earlier in the day, at around 6 a.m., deputies responded to a verbal domestic call at the same home, before the person stabbed call.

Christopher Vaugn was taken to the Stephens County Jail.

Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to the Mountain Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
