TOCCOA, Ga. — A commercial structure fire broke out on the evening of October 3, 2025, in the 2300 block of Highway 123, prompting a multi-agency response and temporary road closures.
According to the Stephens County Fire Department, the blaze was reported around 7:15 p.m., with flames visible from neighboring properties. Firefighters from Carnes Creek, Toccoa, Big Smith, and Shiloh volunteer fire departments were dispatched to the scene.
Highway 123 at East Tugalo Road was temporarily closed for approximately two hours as crews worked to contain the fire and ensure public safety. Traffic was rerouted through nearby local roads during the operation.
Emergency responders reported that no injuries were sustained, and all personnel were able to evacuate the building safely. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though authorities say there is no evidence of foul play at this time.
Witnesses described seeing thick smoke and flames rising above the commercial building, which houses multiple businesses. “It was intense,” said a nearby resident. “We could see the glow from miles away, and the fire trucks came from all directions.”
Stephens County officials thanked the responding fire departments for their rapid coordination and emphasized that the community should remain vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity or safety hazards.
Officials anticipate a full assessment of the property and damages in the coming days. The affected businesses are evaluating structural safety and insurance claims.
Highway 123 reopened by 9:30 p.m., though drivers were advised to exercise caution while traveling in the area as cleanup operations continued.
